Need for Community Response...
Why your response is important
The release of the Parsons Brinkerhoff Road Transport Study for the Kholo
Creek hard rock resource, was an opportunity for residents to formally
respond to the State Government on the issue. In the event, some 75 responses
were received, many of which were of a high standard. This feedback resulted
in considerable changes and enhancements to the PB report, with the result
that the report gained considerably in veracity and depth. While the outcome
and recommendation of the report did not change, the community response
has raised many concerns that would otherwise not have been considered
and as at 1st December 2004, it is not at all clear whether the report
recommendation can or will be adopted due to issues raised.
The community must be ever vigilant. The quarry issue has a habit of
falling into limbo for extended periods of time, with sudden bursts of
activity that catch us all unawares. While the quarry issue is dormant,
it is easy to be lulled into complacency, yet the threat and potential
adverse impacts a large scale industrial development do not go away. SIRA
requests that the community stay alert, monitor the situation and be prepared
to react and respond accordingly to any developments. It is only by strength
of numbers that the community stands a chance to sway the outcome as far
as possible, in favour of residents.
