What is it?

"The Quarry" more formally known as the Kholo Creek Hard Rock Resource is a proposed quarry development to be located in the hills lying immediately to the North of Mt. Crosby. The rock in this area is a type of granite that is particularly well suited for a wide range of commercial applications requiring hard rock, including road making and concrete.

The size of the resource is estimated at 235 million tons, which volumetrically is equivalent to a hole 2 kilometres long, 1 kilometre wide and almost 100 metres deep.

The land is presently owned largely by Boral and Pioneer. Both companies have attempted to commence operations at different times within the past 40 years. They remain interested in exploiting the resource and have the support of the State Government via the Department of State Development.

Significant environmental, social and economic issues exist with the proposed development and material haulage routes.

Where is it?

The quarry area consists of a core resource area surrounded by a buffer zone, which includes residential properties adjacent to Boral and Pioneer landholdings. The quarry landholdings extend from just North of Svensens Rd Mt. Crosby through to Upper Brookfield and Pullenvale as shown in the following sketch:
